Collaboration delivers new Substation Fitter Qualification for the UK

Through close collaboration with industry, Energy & Environment Awards has developed a qualification that sets the competence and safety standard across the energy sector – answering longstanding challenges such as safety risks, recruitment barriers, and on boarding delays in critical substation operations.

The UK energy sector is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. With ambitious targets – 50GW of offshore wind, 70GW of solar, and significant nuclear expansion by 2030 – the demand for safety-critical and technical professionals has never been greater.

But for substation fitters, a critical skills gap exists. The absence of qualifications has created safety concerns, lack of minimum competency standards, recruitment barriers and inefficiency across the supply chain.

Recognising the urgency, a group of forward-thinking organisations – including Siemens Energy, Balfour Beatty, Grosvenor Power Services, Vital Human Resources, Morson Projects, 3T Training Services and Energy & Environment Awards – came together to solve the problem.

The Challenge:

No qualification for substation fitters, leading to recruitment barriers and onboarding delays; and safety risks in the delivery of nationally critical infrastructure

The Solution:

Siemens Energy, Balfour Beatty, Grosvenor Power Services, Vital Human Resources, Morson Projects, 3T Training Services and others formed a working group, adopting a collaborative model with regular workshops, shared documentation, and open dialogue. The group worked with Energy & Environment Awards to develop a qualification.

From concept to delivery in just two years, this achievement demonstrates what can happen when collaboration meets commitment.

The launch of the Level 3 substation qualification marks a turning point for the UK energy sector. It closes a critical skills gap, improves safety, competence standards, and accelerates recruitment. But this is just the beginning – continued collaboration will ensure the qualification evolves with technology and keep the workforce ready for tomorrow’s challenges.

Steve Sharp, Director of Power Training at 3t Training Services said:

“3T Training Services was privileged to be invited to participate in a national working group, where we assisted in the development of a new industry qualification. This opportunity reflects our sector’s commitment to shaping high-quality, future-focused training.”

Rachel Thomas, Managing Director at Energy & Environment Awards, added:

“This qualification represents a significant step forward for the energy sector. By working closely with the employers and training providers, we have developed a qualification that supports workforce competence and strengthens operational safety across the UK’s energy infrastructure.”

Energy & Environment Awards is committed to supporting the energy sector by developing new qualifications that keep skills aligned with evolving industry needs. Speak to a member of our team to find out more.
